Free church management software8 tools, 4 real uses.
Church management software (ChMS) keeps track of people, groups, attendance, volunteers and giving. For a small church, the question is usually which one is free or close to it, and how much setup it needs.
Below are systems with a free plan, free modules or a free self-hosted version, followed by examples of churches using AI to look things up and keep follow-up from slipping. Free tiers change often, so confirm current limits on each official site.
Our rule: we list tools that help you study, organize and serve. We don't list sermon-writing generators.

Is there truly free church management software?
Yes. Rock RMS is free and open source but you host and maintain it yourself. Some hosted systems offer free plans or free individual apps with limits on people or features.
What should a small church look for first?
Simple people records, groups, check-in and giving records, an easy export so you are never locked in, and permissions so sensitive notes stay with the right staff.
Can AI work with our church database?
Some systems now allow read-only AI lookups, for example asking a question in plain English. Keep access read-only and keep pastoral notes out of any outside AI service unless you have reviewed its data policy.
